“To become competent agents of hope, there is a lot to learn!” This statement taken from the first book published by AJAN, sums up why the network devotes so much energy to writing, publishing and distributing material about AIDS in Africa.
Since setting up in 2002, AJAN has been involved in the editing, translation and publication about several books. Each one aims, in one way or another, to promote an effective Christian response to the complex reality of AIDS. The volumes are available in English and/or French and sometimes in Portuguese.
Given the staggering amount of data about AIDS increasingly available, publishing even more may seem superfluous. But we believe it is precisely the information overload that makes insightful and focused writing an imperative. There is much data about AIDS, lots of information and misinformation. The first task of AJAN is to encourage a response of compassion and generosity, but analysis and theological reflection are needed to inspire, ground and sustain the pastoral responses. Apart from promoting writings by Jesuits, AJAN draws attention to the role and teaching of Church leadership in Africa.
AJAN publishes in English together with the Nairobi-based Paulines Publications Africa, in French with Les Éditions du CERAP in Abidjan and in Portuguese with Paulinas Editorial in Maputo.
