The Jesuit parish of St Joseph the Worker in Kangemi, on the outskirts of Nairobi, runs the Upendo program for children who are at risk due to poverty and sometimes abuse, neglect or homelessness. Uzima supports people living with HIV. Upendo reached 173 children and teenagers in 2013 while Uzima had 144 members.

Nyumbani was founded in 1992 by the late Fr Angelo D’Agostino SJ as Kenya’s first facility for HIV-positive orphans. Over the years, Nyumbani expanded to include a community-based program called Lea Toto that operates in slums outside Nairobi and Nyumbani Village in eastern Kenya.

St Aloysius is a high school located just outside Kibera, one of the biggest slums in sub-Saharan Africa. The school is sponsored by Christian Life Community (CLC) Kenya and caters to AIDS-aff ected teenagers from Kibera, most of whom have lost both their parents; the minority has a surviving parent who is living with AIDS.
